He is best known for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the musical biopic Elvis (2022), for which he received a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Meanwhile, the American actor was born in Anaheim, California, to aestheticians Lori Anne and David Butler. And when he was seven, his parents divorced.
Later, Austin Butler began his career in television, first on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, then on teen dramas such as The CW’s Life Unexpected (2010-2011) and Switched at Birth (2011–2012). Meanwhile, the actor used a unique approach inspired by Ryan Gosling to gain weight for his portrayal of Elvis Presley during the second part of The King’s life in Elvis.
The American actor first gained national attention as Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino‘s historical drama Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but it was his portrayal of the titular musical icon in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic that really cemented his place in the spotlight. Later, in an interview with Variety, Butler, who will also be seen in Dune: Part Two, explained how he used the weight gain technique used by Ryan Gosling in The Lovely Bones to bulk up for his scenes as an older Elvis Presley.
While Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance was enhanced by the extra pounds, Gosling’s melted ice cream technique led to his dismissal from The Lovely Bones. Just days before filming began, the director disagreed with Gosling’s approach and replaced him with Mark Wahlberg. Below is Butler’s complete quote:
I heard that when Ryan Gosling was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it. So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, [but then] you feel awful about yourself.
