Liberace, a flamboyant Las Vegas pianist & entertainer, sought the assistance of a Hollywood plastic surgeon in 1979 to have facelifts done on both him and his considerably younger boyfriend, Scott Thorson. Liberace, who was 59 at the time, wanted Thorson to resemble him perfectly. By the way, the original book is written by Scott Thorson himself. The book itself covers the couple’s five-year romance and was written as retaliation for the performer’s sudden breakup and replacement of his lover with a younger boy toy the next day.
In real life, the handsome surgeon didn’t require any outside assistance to create an impression, however, he did have a chin implant implanted by a colleague. Some of Los Angeles’ most renowned residents requested Startz’s assistance because of his work’s propensity for excellence. They were all OK up until one of them, an ex-wife of the Oscar-winning actor Gig Young (They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?), had a face that appeared to have melted.
Elaine Young previously served as the real estate representative for Hollywood royalty, including Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and the Sultan of Brunei. She was recommended to Startz in 1977 after noting how plumper the cheeks of a friend were. She ended up going to his clinic once a month for a year and a half to get liquid silicone injected to create more pronounced cheekbones, and she was thrilled with the results.
Although many doctors had previously seen negative effects and refused to use silicone injections in the face at the time, the FDA was only starting to thoroughly examine this procedure. Elaine Young eventually began to regret attempting to change her appearance in the first place after three years. Her cheeks’ silicone had moved, affecting her eyesight and leaving lumps that were unsightly.
An Associated Press obituary from 2006 noted that she had undergone 46 procedures to remove the material before she passed away from cancer that had started in her cheeks. Jack Startz’s attitude seemed to worsen as a result of his reputation being ruined and suspicions of tax issues. He died as he shot himself in the mouth on May 9, 1985, when he was 54 years old.
On the other hand, Rob Lowe explained that it took about two hours every day to put on the prosthetic facial components, makeup, and hair to transform into the plastic surgeon. He added, “It was actually really painful, because being pulled that long and that hard for a 12-hour day — it gave me migraines.”
