Jo Koy, 52, is a stand-up comedian and actor who grew up in Seattle with a Filipina mother and a white American father according to MSN. Following his parents’ divorce, he spent his formative years in Tacoma, Las Vegas, and even the Philippines. Originally known as Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr., he changed his name to Jo Koy because his maternal aunt nicknamed him Jo Ko, as he disclosed at one of his 2019 stand-up performances.
As a college dropout reared by a single mother, Koy faced numerous challenges, including working multiple jobs, before meeting Sopranos star Steve Schirripa, who recommended Jo Koy to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue a comedy career. Jo followed his advice and went to LA’s Laugh Factory, where he met comedian Tiffany Haddish, who transformed his life.
He soon began appearing on episodes of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Joy Behar Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Call With Carson Daly, Jamie Foxx: Laffapalooza, and @Midnight With Chris Hardwick. He even appeared in 100 episodes of Chelsea Handler’s late-night show, Chelsea Lately, on E!. In early 2017, he secured his first Netflix special, Jo Koy: Live from Seattle, and hasn’t looked back since.
