Gary Barlow Weight Gain: Emotional eating & lockdown caused him to gain so much weight previously

Gary Barlow (@officialgarybarlow) doesn’t seem to have any weight gain in recent years. Instead, he has undergone weight loss in comparison to his before and after photos. However, he has been candid about his past weight gain and struggle with depression. Back in 1996, Barlow gained massive weight following the band’s split. The dramatic decline in his life caused him to become unhappy and gain a lot of weight.

Following the split of Take That, the singer gained five stone reaching a peak of 17.5 stone and at one point he didn’t leave his house for six months. He admitted to removing all the mirrors in his house after putting that much weight. Barlow has openly shared his difficulties with emotional eating, which is a common coping method for stress and unpleasant emotions. His weight was clearly due to emotional eating.

Barlow’s life lacked the structure and discipline that comes with being in a band. The lack of routine contributed to poor eating habits and a drop in physical exercise. During a difficult phase in his life, he turned to food for comfort. He ate a lot of junk food, processed foods, and sugary drinks while not exercising daily. Moreover, Gary loved chips, crisps, and Chinese and would gorge himself on them.

Moreover, the media’s focus on his weight, as well as negative comments from others, increased his low self-esteem and drove his emotional eating habits. On the other hand, personal losses, such as the death of his father, provoked emotional eating and bad coping behaviors. However, he eventually sought the help of a dietitian and dropped the weight.

After losing weight by eating easily-digested food as advised by diet gurus Melissa and Jasmine Hemsley, he gained weight again during the lockdown. During the lockout, Barlow ate more snacks and comfort foods since the lack of form and regularity upset his usual eating patterns. His physical exercise levels fell as gyms and public venues were shuttered, causing weight gain.

Because of the pandemic’s stress and uncertainty, the singer turned to food for comfort, aggravating his weight gain. The lack of social association and public scrutiny allowed him to overindulge without feeling obligated to maintain a healthy weight. In addition, his metabolism slowed with age, making him more difficult to maintain a healthy weight. Now he is in good shape by losing the extra weight.

Barlow developed a positive attitude, emphasizing long-term health and well-being over immediate weight loss. He learned portion management and learned to listen to his body’s hunger and fullness cues. Even when faced with obstacles, the musician maintained consistency in his food and exercise practices. He has realized that losing weight is a journey, not a race and that there will be ups and downs along the road.
