Some magicians criticized Copperfield’s 1991 Mulholland acquisition, which formed the heart of his collection. According to one source, “David Copperfield buying the Mulholland Library is like an Elvis impersonator winding up with Graceland.” Copperfield agreed to buy Dr. Robert Albo‘s largest private magic collection in 1992 to donate to the museum. It holds the world’s largest collection of “Houdiniana” (the Houdini Museum of New York has the second largest).
The museum is not open to the general public; tours are only available to coworkers, other magicians, and serious collectors. The museum is located in a warehouse near Copperfield’s headquarters in Las Vegas and is reached through a secret door in what actor Hugh Jackman humorously described as a sex shop and Forbes as a mail-order lingerie warehouse. Copperfield told,
“It doesn’t need to be secret, it needs to be respected. If a scholar or journalist needs a piece of magic history, it’s there.
